SALT LAKE CITY — Police say two people have died following a crash on Redwood Road.
Officials with the Salt Lake City Police Department said the crash happened Thursday morning between a van and Salt Lake City garbage truck near 980 South Redwood Road.
Witnesses told police the van was traveling northbound when, for unknown reasons, it veered into southbound lanes and collided head-on with the truck.
Officials say both of the van’s occupants died while the garbage truck’s driver was taken to an area hospital with minor injuries.
“We are devastated that this tragic accident today ended with two lives lost,” said Debbie Lyons, director of SLC Sustainability. “We send our deepest condolences to the families of those killed in this collision. Our operator is currently at the hospital being evaluated for injuries. We are supporting our Waste & Recycling family today as they return from their routes.”
Both directions of Redwood Road were closed between Indiana Avenue and 1050 South for several hours while emergency crews were on scene.
Officers have not identified either of the victims and have not released a cause for the crash. Police said this crash marks the fifth and sixth traffic-related fatalities in Salt Lake City this year.
