SANDY, Utah — It was a scary afternoon for a Sandy family when a lawn care truck barreled through their house.
The driver of that landscape truck told police he was watching a YouTube video while driving when he lost control and crashed Tuesday.
Lucy Curtis has lived in the Sandy home for more than 20 years and was working on a quilt for Ukrainian refugees when she saw the truck speed past her window.
She went outside and called her daughter.
“I heard a noise and saw a truck zoom past,” Curtis said.
Her daughter Lynn, lives nearby and rushed to the scene. She couldn’t believe her eyes.
“It seems like there was a work truck that came down the street, went through the neighbor’s yard, hit the basketball hoop and went through her yard into her garage, totaling her car, and out the other side,” Lynn said.
That truck belongs to Corey Draper. He’s had a landscape company for 30 years.
“A fertilizer technician was driving down the street and apparently, from what he told the police officers, is he was watching a YouTube video,” Draper said.
Draper said in all these years, he thought he had seen everything, but he had never experienced this. He said his guys are not allowed to be on their phones at all while driving. But he says he’s glad no one was seriously injured and this is why he has insurance on his fleet.
As for Lucy, she’s shaken up. But, family and friends are making sure the garage is secure and she is OK.
