PROVO, Utah — A man was saved by search and rescue operations after he was critically injured while hiking at Bridal Veil Falls.
According to Sgt. Spencer Cannon with the Utah County Sheriff’s Office, the man sustained a broken jaw and other head injuries after a chunk of ice, possibly the size of a basketball, fell and hit him on the head.
Crews said they don’t believe the man was wearing a helmet, and he desperately needed help when they arrived.

“We had to get him over to the other side, where the helicopter could actually have access to him,” said Mitch Hall. “So we rigged up a system to get him across and blade him down further, and then the helicopter came and picked him up.”
The critically-injured man was hoisted down to a medical team in the parking lot.
As winter conditions transition to spring, crews say the risk of falling ice and rocks is elevated, so it’s something crews say to take seriously.
A search and rescue volunteer was struck by a small rock during the incident.
