Snow postpones home opener for Salt Lake Bees

SALT LAKE CITY – In a sport synonymous with warm weather and outdoor fun, Tuesday Mother Nature got the win. The Salt Lake Bees postponed their home opener because of snow.

“We’ve had snow in April in the past. And we will again,” said Marc Amicone. “It’s just kind of hit and miss this time of year.”

Amicone is the Salt Lake Bees general manager and knew there was snow in the forecast for the game tonight.

However, when the snowfall went into extra innings overnight, he also knew even a blind umpire could make this call.

You know, there just comes a point where it doesn’t make sense,” said Amicone. “It’s too cold for the players and fans don’t want to be here, so we’ll hope for a better day tomorrow.”

At least today’s game will be made up.

Six years ago, the Bees’ parent club, the Los Angeles Angels, had a game set at Smith’s Ballpark before Opening Day only to have that game canceled because of snow.

That game couldn’t be made up later.

“I still have those pictures on my phone,” said Amicone with a laugh. “Two days before sunny and 70, the day before a little cloudy, and then just like this on the day of the game. Yeah, it was rough.”

It’s also springtime in Utah.

Everyone will tell you if you’re planning an event outside, it’s best to keep a good attitude about it all.

“I’ve told people that the Bees can help with the drought right now because every time we schedule home games it rains or snows, so you know, we’ll do our part,” said Amicone with another laugh.

A double-header is planned for Wednesday, April 13.

Anybody who had tickets to Tuesday’s game can use them for Wednesday or any game in the future.
