Monday’s snow was too heavy for some trees
SOUTH JORDAN, Utah – Broken tree limbs forced some Utahns to get outside Tuesday morning to clean up after the overnight snow proved to be too heavy for some branches.
Ron from South Jordan was one of those up early.
“The big one was down and I went over to the fitness center and came back and the other one was down,” Ron said.
Fortunately, the cleanup did not involve a lot of labor. The overnight snowstorm did bring quite the punch causing some pretty good sized limbs to fall.
“I was blown away. I wasn’t expecting this much snow,” said Nate Abbott a tree and nursery expert at Schmidt’s Farm and Greenhouse in West Jordan.
“The weight of this snow, it’s a really wet spring snow. It’s got a lot more weight than the typical winter snow we get,” he said.

He said the first thing people need to do is shake the snow off the branches that are still intact and easy to reach. If a broken limb needs cleaning don’t leave any jagged edges on the tree, make it a clean cut.
“Because if water gets in there you will have fungus and stuff like that breed in there and it can cause an infection point on the tree,” said Abbott.
Ryan Schmidt who is the owner of the nursery said people also want to make sure they bring in perennials if they have already purchased them. He said the ongoing snow and cold temperatures we are expecting will kill them.
“We want to keep these inside,” he said. “They are beautiful plants, but too tender to go outside right now.”
He said the best flowers for these conditions are pansies.
“Here we have a flat of pansies. These are probably the toughest around,” he said.
