The victim, identified as 27-year-old Romeo Charles Stevens, was found with several gunshot wounds on Main Street, south of Utopia Avenue, late Monday night.
Danielle Croyle, public information officer for the South Salt Lake Police Department, said investigators believe the incident started as an altercation in the WinCo parking lot that escalated before the gunshots were fired.
Croyle said they do think this was not a random act but started as an altercation between associates of some sort before escalating into the deadly scene.
South Salt Lake police said the suspect, Damian Stafon Coleman, 27, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on charges of murder and aggravated robbery.
Officers also located and impounded a blue Chevrolet Impala in connection to their investigation.
