CEDAR CITY, Utah — A heavy rainstorm that swept through the Cedar City area Sunday evening caused street flooding, flash floods in dry creek beds and a mudslide on a highway.

The National Weather Service put out a flood advisory for the Cedar City/Enoch area, and residents captured video of the results once the storm moved through.

“Our whole cul-de-sac, a quarter of it was just a puddle, like a couple of inches of solid water,” said Jax Harris. Harris, who lives in Cedar City, said the rain came in like a monsoon. Drains began to overflow.

“I’ve had a couple of friends that said they’ve had to watch their house and make sure it wasn’t flooded,” he said.

Up Cedar Canyon on state Route 14, rocks and mud slid across the roadway.

Ashlyn Gubler, who took video of the aftermath, said traffic came to a halt.

“We thought maybe there was an accident because everyone got out of their cars and started running,” she wrote in a message to KSL TV. “Then, all of a sudden, we saw a bunch of rocks flying through the air.”

She said the people who jumped out of their cars moved the rocks out of the road before police arrived so drivers could make it through the slide area. Everyone appeared to be OK.

Harris said the storm passed through in about 15 minutes. His video shows his Toyota Corolla in the water as he sticks his hand down just below the open door to splash the water.

“Yeah, we’re in deep. We’re in deep!” he said in the video.

With the storm appearing not to wreak too much havoc, Harris explained how he went and had fun.

“I took out my Toyota Corolla that I chopped off the roof. It’s awesome, yeah took that out, and I went and played in the puddles,” he said with a chuckle.

Another viewer video shows Harris’ unique-looking Corolla zoom by in the flooded water.

“I love it,” Harris said. “I love the rain. It makes me happy.”
