Gunman at large following deadly shooting in Draper

UPDATE: A 21-year-old man has been arrested in connection to the murder of 33-year-old Remey Rowland in Draper.

Officials with the Draper Police Department said Alexis Marquez was found at his apartment in the city Wednesday, Aug. 17, and booked into the Salt Lake County Adult Detention Center.

DRAPER, Utah — Police are searching for a gunman in a deadly early morning shooting in Draper.

The victim was shot in the parking lot of the Heritage at Draper apartment complex and died on the sidewalk. It’s shaken the residents who live in the area who now worry for their safety.

“I was just in the middle of my bedtime routine, finishing up a few things, and then I heard ‘pop, pop, pop,'” a Heritage at Draper resident told KSL.

The shooting occurred just after 1 a.m. Thursday when Draper police received multiple 911 calls reporting a shooting at the Heritage at Draper apartment complex, located at 11715 State Street.

“I just assumed it was the car backfiring,” the resident said.

The resident — who asked us not to use his name — lives close to where the shooting unfolded. He volunteered to speak on his neighbor’s behalf, who witnessed the moments after the shooting and is worried about his safety.

“My neighbor told me that a man walked up and stood there for a second over the guy he saw laying on the ground and then walked away.”

Draper police have now identified the victim as 33-year-old Remey Rowland of Salt Lake City.

They say he drove a green Subaru to the apartment complex to meet someone and believe he was shot while still partially inside it.

“We’re still working on the motive, trying to figure out why it occurred at this location. But really, the investigation is ongoing and it’s too early to say,” said Lt. Pat Evans with the Draper City Police Department.

This is the fifth shooting in Draper in just the past year; the third deadly.

Residents are worried about the spike in crime and hope Draper police find answers soon.

“I’m a little nervous about everything now, a little unsure,” the resident said. “I don’t even know if I want to stay at home tonight given the situation.”

Draper police say Rowland was not a resident at this apartment complex, so they don’t yet know why he was here.

They ask if anyone heard or saw anything that could shed light on the shooting to give them a call at 801-840-4000.

Rowland’s family has created a GoFundMe* to cover funeral expenses.
