GOSHEN, Utah — Four days after two-inches of rain fell in one hour in Goshen, a family is facing a big bill to repair damage. Goshen Mayor Steven Staheli is making sure county and state crews fix things, too.
The MacLees home and yard were the hardest hit in the town. They watched helplessly as a river of water flooded into their yard and ultimately their basement.
Over the last few days, they’ve torn out carpet, drywall and baseboards, and have spent thousands of dollars at The Home Depot. Adding insult to injury, like most families in Goshen, the MacLees — who moved to the city nine years ago — don’t have flood insurance. The area hasn’t flooded in years.
“Unfortunately, the insurance won’t cover this,” Jon MacLee said. “We don’t have flood insurance; it’s a separate policy you have to purchase. You don’t think you need flood insurance when you live out here.”
Mayor Steven Staheli has lived in Goshen his entire life.
“I’ve never seen a storm like that in Goshen before,” he said.
After making sure everyone in his town was alright, Staheli was quick to check on new natural gas lines going in.
“One spot we had flooded out with the infrastructure of the natural gas, um our construction, dominion came right in and fixed that immediately.”
He said the city is still on track to have natural gas by mid-October.
The MacLees say they are trying to roll with the punches and move forward. They have set up a GoFundMe* page if you would like to help them out.
