RIVERTON, Utah — Police are searching for a porch pirate after he fled from them in a U-Haul Sunday morning.
Riverton Police told KSL TV that Bluffdale and Riverton residents have been reporting that their packages were being stolen from their porches and items were taken from their vehicles over several nights.
Neighbors and victims had surveillance video of a U-Haul taking the stolen items and placing them in the truck.
At approximately 6 a.m., reports of the suspected U-Haul were called in.
Riverton Police found the U-Haul around 1300 West 13200 South and began following the truck to perform a traffic stop.
According to police, a woman passenger in the U-Haul noticed police and attempted to flee on foot, but officers were able to place her into custody without further issue.
The man driving the U-Haul fled in the truck, but officers did not pursue him. They later found the U-Haul abandoned in a field in Bluffdale.
Riverton Police said they started to search for the man with a helicopter, drones, and K-9 units. A neighbor noticed the suspect fleeing through their backyard.
Police were not able to catch the suspect, but they know his identity and will be charged when found.
