One dead after a ‘domestic situation’ in SLC, police say

SALT LAKE CITY — A woman was accused of killing her boyfriend outside of an apartment complex in Salt Lake City overnight.

According to a release from police, the investigation began just after midnight on Monday when dispatch received information about a 27-year-old man who had been shot at an apartment complex near 900 South 200 West.

“It looks like it is a domestic situation,” said Det. Michelle Peterson, spokesman for Salt Lake City Police Department.

Officers responded and found the victim, who was identified as Demetrius Omar Lateef Allen.

Allen had one gunshot wound and was transported to a hospital, where he died.

A release from Salt Lake City Police states, “Officers saw multiple bullet holes coming from an apartment. After developing a plan, officers safely took the suspect, 21-year-old LaShawn Denise Bagley, into custody.”

They said Allen was in town for the weekend visiting his girlfriend, LaShawn Denise Bagley.

“They were in a relationship. They attended the fair together and then went to a local bar. Got into an argument,” Peterson said.

Police believe the argument got heated, and that’s when Allen decided to go back to Bagley’s apartment and pack up his stuff to leave.

Allen went to Bagley’s apartment to get his property when shots were fired.

Professional Bull Riders Commissioner and CEO Sean Gleason issued a statement about the incident Monday:

We are shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of Demetrius Allen, who fans knew as Ouncie Mitchell.  Ouncie was a talented cowboy and a familiar face on the Velocity Tour. He also competed in the Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo, whose president Valeria Howard-Cunningham shares our grief.

Ouncie got his name because he was born small.  He grew up to compete with a huge heart. The PBR organization sincerely extends our own heartfelt condolences to Ouncie’s cousin Ezekiel Mitchell and the entire Mitchell family.

Bagley was booked into Salt Lake County Metro Jail on charges of murder and felony discharge of a firearm.

This is the 10th homicide in Salt Lake City so far this year.

“If you’re in a domestic violence situation, there is help available. Please call us,” Peterson said. “We have a victims advocate that can give resources. Reach out to somebody.”

SLCPD released an update on the case Jan. 6, 2022 after the suspect was successfully arrested in Houston, Texas.

We encourage anyone who has experienced Domestic Violence to call  799-3000 and ask to speak with a Victim Advocate or call their 24-hour hotline directly at 801-580-7969. All services are free, and callers can get information anonymously.
