SALT LAKE CITY — As storms continue to move through the Beehive State, the Salt Lake City Police Department is reminding drivers how to stay safe out on the roads.
Det. Ben Nielson shared some tips in a video posted to SLCPD’s Twitter account on Monday:
- Have a little extra stopping distance due to possible debris or hazards in the road
- Treat intersections as a four-way stop if the lights are not working properly
- Have a little patience with each other
- Slow down
- Call police if there are downed power lines or debris in the road
- Be aware of officers
- Make sure your headlights are working
“If we all just slow down, be safe, it will make it all better for everyone,” Nielson said.
The Duchesne Volunteer Fire Department also encouraged drivers to carry certain items in their car to handle common winter driving-related tasks, as well as emergency supplies. Those include:
- A snow shovel, broom and ice scraper
- Abrasive material (sand or kitty litter) in case your vehicle gets stuck in the snow
- Jumper cables, flashlight and warning devices (flares and emergency markers)
- Blankets for protection from the cold
- A cell phone and charger, water, food, and any necessary medicine
