CLEARFIELD, Utah — A former Clearfield High School teacher was arrested Wednesday and accused of sexual misconduct with a student in his classroom during the 2018-19 school year according to a report from KSL.com

Miles Christopher Nance, 39, was booked into the Davis County Jail for investigation of rape, forcible sodomy, sexual exploitation of a minor and dealing in materials harmful to a minor.

A LinkedIn profile that appears to belong to Nance states that he taught at Clearfield High from 2015 to 2021 and at Mueller Park Junior High from 2020 to 2021.

A Davis School District spokeswoman confirmed Nance taught at the school. “Davis School District can confirm Miles Nance was a teacher at Clearfield High for five years before teaching at Mueller Park Jr High until November 2021,” the statement said.

Davis School District is committed to protecting students and does not tolerate sexual harassment or sexual violence in our schools or school communities. The safety of our students is our top priority.

Police began investigating in September when they spoke with the alleged victim about incidents she said took place when she was 17 years old and was taking a French class from Nance. The woman told police she had been going through a rough time when Nance reached out to her through his school email offering support. Eventually, they moved from the school email system to communicating via their personal emails, a police booking affidavit states.

The woman told police that Nance began asking her inappropriate questions in their emails, as well as telling her how depressed he was.

“He would tell her things like he didn’t want to come to school because he was sad and how his wife did not want to have sex with him anymore,” the affidavit states. Police say Nance would also show her the class roll and point out which girls he’d have sex with and which he wouldn’t.

The woman told police that she and Nance moved their communication to Snapchat, and that Nance asked her to delete all of their previous emails “so no one would find out what they were doing,” according to the affidavit. On Snapchat, police say Nance would send her sexually explicit photos and videos and request the same from her, becoming upset if she didn’t comply.

One day after school, the woman said she went to Nance’s classroom and he turned off the classroom lights, shut the door and engaged in a sexual act with the student in a storage closet in the classroom, the arrest report states. On another occasion in the same closet, Nance is accused of engaging in sexual intercourse with the girl.

“Mr. Nance was served with a protective order days ago and knew what he had done,” Clearfield police wrote in the affidavit. Court records indicate a temporary sexual violence protective order was issued against a Miles Nance in October and an amended order was filed last week.
