LOGAN, Utah — A jogger and several bystanders jumped into action Monday as they tried to save a woman whose vehicle overturned into the Logan River.
Tony Peacock said he was jogging near 1500 E. Canyon Road in Logan Canyon Monday morning when he spotted the SUV overturned in the water.
“I ran to the (USU) Water Research Lab and was panicked at that point because it was evident that probably nobody reported the accident,” Peacock said.
After finding someone to call 911, Peacock ran back outside and yelled to several people in the parking lot to help him. He then scaled the roughly 15-foot embankment down to the water.
“I tried to open the door on the SUV that was down here and couldn’t do that,” Peacock said. “A couple people came along and helped me, and we were able to pull the lady out.”
Peacock said he and the others pulled the woman out of the vehicle through the door’s window, and as they were carrying her up towards the road, first responders arrived.
“Fire personnel arrived and assisted in getting her the rest of the way up on top of the roadway. They started CPR and got her to Logan Regional Hospital,” said Capt. Curtis Hooley with Logan City Police Department.
Hooley said the woman, a local resident in her 30s, died at the hospital. He said she was the only person in the vehicle.
“They’ve searched the river,” he said. “We’ve confirmed her children are in somebody else’s custody; they’re safe. We believe she’s the only occupant of that vehicle.”
Investigators are now trying to determine what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway and how long it was in the water before being discovered by Peacock.
“Somebody heard a loud noise about 45 minutes earlier, so it may have happened as long as 45 minutes earlier, maybe even a couple hours before that,” Peacock said.
“The engine is mostly cold, so she had been in there at least a little while,” Hooley said.
