Two Navajo Nation women convicted to federal prison for child abuse

SALT LAKE CITY — Two women were sentenced to prison after pleading guilty to child abuse, according to the FBI on Tuesday.
Teresa Red Bird, 52, and her daughter, Ocianna Red Bird, 23, of Montezuma Creek, are members of the Navajo Nation and reside within the nation. Both plead guilty to felony child abuse.
According to the FBI, Teresa admitted to intentionally hitting and withdrawing care to a 14-year-old victim under her supervision on “numerous occasions.”
“[Teresa] failed to ensure that the victim ate properly; and that she caused serious physical injury to the victim,” reads the FBI statement.
Ocianna also admitted to intentionally hitting, confining, and withholding food from the victim.
Teresa was sentenced to 10 months in federal prison, followed by 36 months of supervised release. Ocianna was sentenced to 6 months in federal prison and 24 months supervised release.
