MURRAY, Utah — A 16-year-old girl has died from her injuries, according to her family, after she was struck by a car in a Centerville crosswalk last week.

The crash occurred at 2025 N. Main Street on Wednesday, Nov. 9.

Police said the teen was crossing Centerville’s Main Street in a marked crosswalk, at approximately 11:28 a.m., when she was hit by a Toyota Highlander, driven by an 82-year-old woman.

The teen’s sister said the victim was trying to get on a city bus on her way to school. That routine walk across the street was to catch a bus headed to her charter school in Farmington.

Police said the 16-year-old — later identified as Maya Staples — sustained “very significant” injuries after being thrown 60 to 80 feet south of the crosswalk. She was then transported to Intermountain Medical Center via ambulance.

On Thursday, she remained unconscious in her hospital room.

A GoFundMe* page was organized shortly thereafter to help with medical expenses. A week later, on Nov. 16, Staples’ sister confirmed to KSL that she died from her injuries.

According to a website created to update family and friends on the teen’s condition, the family will spend the next few days in the hospital as they await further testing from Staples’ care team to start the organ-donation process.

“To our family, neighbors, friends and community, we love you. Thank you for allowing Maya’s story into your lives and hearts. Thank you for mourning with us, praying for us, and loving our Maya,” the statement continued.
