SALT LAKE CITY — Since 1971, the Snowbird Tram has carried people up and down Little Cottonwood Canyon. For the first time in a long time, the tram cabins got quite the facelift and made history.
As the first new tram cabins to open in the last 50 years at Snowbird, skiers and snowboarders shared in the excitement Friday as they waited in line to hop on the early rides.

It’s a historic moment… as it’s the 1st time in 50 years that skiers and riders will be shuttled to Hidden Peak via new cabins! 🚠@KSL5TV @Snowbird pic.twitter.com/JkyxXHDrsN

“We wanted to be part of the celebration and do it right, so here we are!” Michael Hernandez said.

Kelsey Johnson, Snowbird’s creative manager, said the new tram cabins are a big hit.
“In the wintertime, they’re really, really a game changer. It feels like you’re flying through the air as you head across the center,” Johnson said.
Johnson has worked at Snowbird for the last few years. In that time, the trams have been a work in progress.
“We installed the blue one back in June and the red just finished commissioning on Tuesday.”

Sporting a red and blue tram, the sleek, modern look applies to both, offering what many will agree are incredible views.
“Floor to ceiling windows,” Johnson said.
Diana Koelliker and her family are visiting Utah from out of state. Catching their first ride up for the day, they said they are excited.
“This has certainly been a success!” Koelliker said.
Safe to say, it won’t be their family’s last trip, rather a lot of firsts are in the mix.
“We’re looking forward to that shape, and the new tram’s gonna carry us into the next 50 years,” Johnson said.
