Syracuse residents search for driver who destroyed mailboxes overnight

Dec 5, 2022, 6:39 PM | Updated: 7:17 pm

SYRACUSE, Utah — Several families are looking for answers after someone drove through their yards Monday morning on Marilyn Drive, destroying property and mailboxes.

“I had packages in my mailbox that I’m pretty sure are destroyed,” said Holly Wilson. “I had mail scattered everywhere; it was just like, what the heck happened here?”

At 1:14 a.m., Wilson’s security camera captured a silver truck plowing through her yard and smashing into two mailboxes on the property.

“His truck kind of bounced a little bit, and then he ended up hopping off our driveway,” Wilson explained.

From a neighboring security camera, the silver truck can be seen continuing onto Wilson’s neighbor’s property, where it destroyed two more mailboxes, one cemented into the ground.

As Wilson ran outside to see the commotion, the silver truck turned around at the top of her street and passed by her home again.

“He came back down at 1:20 a.m., and he saw me running down the sidewalk to get his license plate number, and he still didn’t want to stop,” said Wilson.

Wilson called Syracuse Police, who responded to the home overnight. Detective Erin Behm of Syracuse PD says the vehicle will likely be damaged.

“Definitely front-end damage, definitely severe,” Behm said.

In total, KSL-TV located five mailboxes in the neighborhood near Cook Elementary that were destroyed this morning. Each homeowner shares a similar story.

Behm says if the driver is caught, he’ll likely face charges.

“Property damage charges for sure, maybe a criminal mischief charge, leaving the scene of an accident,” he said.

Behm encourages anyone who sees a silver truck in the area with front-end damage to report it to police. Wilson hopes the driver is caught soon and held accountable for the damage.

“I am just wanting him to come forward for the damages he created, not just for me but the other residents in this neighborhood that lost mailboxes,” Wilson said.
