MILLARD COUNTY, Utah — A man is in police custody after driving a stolen car in a high-speed chase through Millard County Friday.
Luis Alfredo Manriquez, 31, of Salt Lake City, was booked into Millard County Jail for felony charges of receiving a stolen vehicle, failing to respond to an officer’s signal to stop, misdemeanor charges of reckless driving, possession of a controlled substance, use or possession of drug paraphernalia, and a ticket for speeding, according to the affidavit.
On Friday, Millard County Sherriff officers were notified that a stolen silver car was leaving Eureka, Utah, and heading towards Millard County.
A responding officer waited in Lynndyl, Utah, to join the chase as the silver car sped past them on State Route 6 heading towards Delta, Utah, according to the affidavit. The silver car was going about 105 mph in a 65 mph zone.
Another Millard County Sherriff officer attempted to spike the silver car, but it was able to avoid the trap by driving off the road into the dirt.
The silver car was able to correct itself, got back on the road, and continued southbound at a high rate of speed, according to the affidavit. An officer noticed that the driver was a man wearing a beanie.
Millard County Sherriff officers attempted to spike the car again, but it was unsuccessful.
As a safety precaution, police stopped the chase before reaching Delta as students were about to be let out of school.
Millard County Sherriff officers began to search for the suspect and the stolen silver car when they got a tip that the vehicle was abandoned near 500 West next to an overpass, according to the affidavit.
The tipster told police they saw a man running away from the scene and left a beanie in the snow.
When Millard County Sherriff officers arrived, they found the silver car abandoned and still running, but it had no key in the ignition, according to the affidavit. Officers noticed the car was hotwired.
Police were able to locate tracks from the driver along with the beanie left in the snow.
“With the help of surveillance footage at a grocery store we could see who the driver was and a clothing description,” reads the affidavit.
During their search through Delta, a deputy checked with the Budget Motel and found someone matching the suspect description who checked in that day.
Millard County Sherriff officers were able to contact the suspect and arrest him without further incident, according to the affidavit. They identified him as Manriquez.
A deputy got a search warrant for Manriquez’s motel room and found a class pipe that tested positive for methamphetamine.
After being read this Maranda rights, Manriquez admitted to driving the car, fleeing from police, and abandoning the car.
According to the affidavit, Manriquez had a warrant for his arrest in Salt lake City and had an “extensive criminal history.”
