MIDVALE, Utah — A woman stabbed multiple times Friday allegedly by her ex-boyfriend, which also prompted police to issue an Amber Alert, is improving and expected to survive, Unified police said Monday.

Jonathan Moises Waunloxten-Hidalgo, 20, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on Saturday for investigation of attempted aggravated murder, aggravated kidnapping, child kidnapping, two counts of stealing a car, domestic violence in the presence of a child and being a restricted person in possession of a weapon.

The 20-year-old woman told police she had broken up with Waunloxten-Hidalgo about a month ago but he “has been stalking her ever since,” according to a police booking affidavit.

On Friday, the woman drove a relative’s car to her mother’s home in Midvale and parked in front. That’s when Waunloxten-Hidalgo got into the passenger seat “and immediately started stabbing her. (She) said she tried to exit the vehicle, but Jonathan grabbed her by the hair and continued to stab her,” the affidavit states. Police say the woman was stabbed five times.

The woman was able to get out of the car. But Waunloxten-Hidalgo then got into the driver’s seat and drove away with the woman’s 4-year-old niece still in the back seat, according to police.

When officers arrived at the scene, the woman was “unconscious,” the affidavit states. She regained consciousness at the scene and told officers that her niece was still in the car, prompting Unified police to issue an Amber Alert. Shortly after the alert was issued, police learned that the girl was dropped off near a relative’s home unharmed, the affidavit states.

The stolen car was found abandoned on I-15 near 3600 South. On Saturday, acting on a tip, police located Waunloxten-Hidalgo in Ogden in the woman’s car, according to the affidavit. A brief standoff with police ended when officers deployed tear gas into the vehicle, according to Unified police. With a police K-9 also standing by, officers say Waunloxten-Hidalgo surrendered without further incident.

How Waunloxten-Hidalgo was able to abandon one vehicle and get to a second vehicle was still being investigated Monday.
