Police find new motive in Taylorsville shooting, do not believe it was road rage

TAYLORSVILLE, Utah  – Police have found a new motive in a shooting that left one man injured Thursday, and police say they do not believe it was a road rage incident as previously reported.

According to a release from Taylorsville Police Department, additional information in the case indicates that the shots fired on Thursday more likely stemmed from a “botched drug deal or attempted robbery.”

The release states, “Investigators, after speaking with witnesses near the scene, initially believed the shooting was a road-rage incident.  But after further investigation, officers believe the incident to be some type of drug deal gone bad, or an attempted robbery-type situation.”

Investigators served a search warrant on the car of the man who was shot and found “distributable amounts of narcotics and a large amount of money in his car.”

The man was shot in the back of the head in the incident and transported to the hospital in stable condition. Police say the man is from out of state and is not cooperating with investigators or the investigation.

Police are still searching for the suspects who fired shots; the occupants of a gray 2020-2022 GMC Arcadia SUV. The car was seen heading east on 6200 South at 1800 West at approximately 1:30 p.m. Thursday.

Investigators have released an image of the SUV that was provided to them from video surveillance at the scene.

Police are asking anyone with information about the SUV is  to contact TVPD’s non-emergency dispatch number at 801-840-4000 and reference case #TY22-40833. 

A man was shot in the back of his head Thursday afternoon causing him to crash into the overpass of  Interstate 215.

Following the crash, there was a road closure at Redwood Road southbound near 5800 South and I-215 for several hours.

The man is expected to recover.
