PAYSON, Utah — A Springville woman who prosecutors say had been threatening for months to kill her estranged husband’s new girlfriend was charged Tuesday with shooting the girlfriend.
Shaina Cary Hold, 32, is charged in 4th District Court with attempted murder, a first-degree felony; aggravated assault and possession of a gun by a restricted person, third-degree felonies; and two counts of assault, a class B misdemeanor.
On Dec. 22, Payson police were called to 532 W. Saddlebrook Drive after a woman called 911 “yelling that she had been held at gunpoint. While en route to the location, officers were advised one individual had been shot, screaming was heard in the background,” according to a police booking affidavit.
When officers arrived at the home, they “found a trail of blood on the stairs from the basement and leading into a locked room on the main floor. Officers then heard a commotion in the basement,” charging documents state. Police entered the basement and found Hold’s estranged husband holding her hands and telling her to drop the gun.
“Shaina Cary Hold was able to get her hand free and was able to shoot herself in the head,” according to the charges.
Hold was taken to a local hospital where she was treated for her injuries and survived. About a week later, she was booked into the Utah County Jail.
Detectives learned that Hold and her estranged husband are married but going through a divorce, that the estranged husband is dating another woman and that Hold “is not happy about that relationship. Shaina Cary Hold had been threatening to kill (the girlfriend) for months,” the charges state.
On Dec. 16, police were notified that Hold “had sent messages through social media indicating that she was going to kill (the woman her estranged husband was with) and spread body parts from Payson to Mexico. This would indicate that Shaina had premeditated ideations on killing (the woman),” the affidavit alleges.
On Dec. 22, Hold saw her estranged husband and the girlfriend at the house together and was told by another person at the residence “to be civil and not cause any problems,” according to the charges. Hold helped carry groceries into the home, and then went to the basement to talk with the couple.
Moments later, the girlfriend went back upstairs while calling 911 and stating Hold “was holding a gun to the head of both (her and the estranged husband) and to come quickly,” the charges allege. When the girlfriend returned to the basement, Hold told her to hang up the police and then allegedly hit her in the head with the gun.
“This caused (the girlfriend) to lose her balance and fall. Before hitting the ground, Shaina Cary Hold shot (her) in the upper thigh,” the charging documents state. As the husband tried to grab the gun from Hold, she allegedly stated “several times ‘No, I’m gonna finish it.'”
The girlfriend crawled up the stairs and locked herself in a bedroom as the husband held Hold until police arrived.
On Dec. 25, police said Hold was heard saying that the shooting victim “deserved it,” the charges say.
