SALT LAKE CITY — As the holidays come peeking around the corner, a local charity is gearing up to help provide thousands of meals to those in need.
Salt Lake City Mission is calling on the public for donations.
Starting in October, Salt Lake City Mission is beginning its holiday preparation with “Harvest for the Hungry.” The project will help families put food on the table for Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Pastor Shawn Clay, Executive Director for Salt Lake City Mission, said that because of the payment obligations the center needs to maintain to stay open, the need for supplies is always there.
“You know, we don’t get a break on rent. We don’t get a break on gas…” Clay said.
For many families, the holidays are extra stressful financially because of their own payment obligations they need to make daily. That is the gap Salt Lake City Mission wants to help fill with the community’s help.
Salt Lake City Mission is asking for donated turkeys, hams, potatoes, and pies. They want to provide families with everything needed for a Thanksgiving dinner.
“You’re relieving a lot of stress off of a home that is struggling already just to put food on the table,” Clay said.
As the weather in Salt Lake City heads to cooler temperatures, Salt Lake City Mission is looking for gently used or new clothing donations to help those in need to stay warm.
Items they want to stock up on include hand warmers, coats, gloves, hats, socks, and underwear.
The center is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
They’re also hosting donation drop-offs on select Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Those Saturdays include: Oct. 28, Nov. 4, 11, 18, and Dec. 2, 9, 16.
Donations can be dropped at the center at 1151 S Redwood Rd #106, SLC UT 84101.
