BASE jumper dies after unsuccessful jump in Grand Canyon, officials say

FLAGSTAFF, Arizona — Grand Canyon National Park officials recovered a man’s body Friday morning after he was found dead Thursday morning.
According to a press release, the Grand Canyon Regional Communications Center received a report of a man who attempted a BASE jump from Yavapai Point on the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park.
Park officials said when park rangers arrived, they found the man’s body with a deployed parachute about feet below the rim.
“Recovery teams were able to reach the victim this morning. The body was transported to the rim by helicopter and subsequently transferred to the Coconino County Medical Examiner’s Office,” the press release stated.
The National Park Service and the Coconino County Medical Examiner’s Office are investigating the fatal accident. Officials are withholding the victim’s name until they can positively identify him.
Park officials reminded visitors that BASE jumping is prohibited in all areas of Grand Canyon National Park. This is the fifth reported death in the park since June.
