PARK CITY — A woman died near Park City High School after she was hit by a truck while crossing the road, according to Utah Highway Patrol.
According to UHP, the woman was crossing Kearns Boulevard near state Route 248 without using the marked crossing zone, when a pickup truck traveling eastbound hit her.
The woman was identified Friday as 55-year-old Catalina Alvarado Lopez of Park City.
The woman was rushed in an ambulance to a nearby hospital, where she later died.
The driver of the pickup truck remained on scene while the investigation continued.
Caleb Fine, Interim Park City School District Superintendent, said the woman hit was not a student in the district.
“Our community is reeling because any time someone is hit; regardless of whether it was a student or not, it’s going to impact our community. It’s going to impact our schools,” Fine said.
Fine said the district wants to encourage the safest paths possible as a walkable community and district, including the tunnel right in front of the school. Fine said that may have prevented what happened Friday morning.
A statement from Park City School District spokesman Heidi Matthews said both high school and middle school students saw the incident. Mental health coaches would be available on-site for any students who need emotional support.
Late arriving students, including the bordering schools of Treasure Mountain Junior High and Mcpolin Elementary, were excused, according to the statement.
