SALT LAKE CITY – It’s New Year’s Eve, and for those celebrating with fireworks, cities are reminding people to light them responsibly.
In Sept., Layton put additional firework restrictions in place to help keep the community safe and limit fire danger. The use of fireworks in public parks is prohibited, as are aerial fireworks throughout the city, according to the Layton Fire Department.
Additional restrictions
The Layton Fire Department said all fire works are banned east of Highway 89 withing Layton City boundaries. Additionally, aerial fireworks are not allowed west of Highway 89 and east of Fairfield Rd., and east of Church St. They are not permitted North of Highway 193 through the border of Hill Air Force Base. A full map of firework restrictions in Layton can be found here.
“Our goal is to protect the community while encouraging safe alternatives,” Layton Fire Chief Kevin Ward said. “Even legal fireworks carry risks, and we strongly recommend attending professional displays instead.”
In Sandy, firework laws state fireworks are permitted from 11 a.m. on New Year’s Eve until 1 a.m. on New Year’s Day, according to a post from Sandy City on Facebook. A map outlining which areas prohibit fireworks was also included.
Firefighters said it is best practice to soak used fireworks in water overnight before disposing of them.
