UDOT: Limit Travel & Stay Off Roads During Winter Storm

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Utah Department of Transportation officials are asking Utahns to limit travel and stay off the roads as much as possible as a winter storm moves into the Beehive State.

Winter storm warnings go into effect across Utah Sunday night, with most lasting into Tuesday morning. The KSL Weather team expects northern and central valleys to see four to eight inches of snow while mountains will see one to two feet of snow.

Salt Lake and Tooele valley locations could see 10 or more inches of snowfall with this storm.

“All indications are that this is a major winter storm,” said UDOT spokesperson John Gleason. “So we’re recommending that if people have flexibility with their travel tomorrow that they stay off the roads as much as possible.”

Gleason said their main goal is keeping Utahns safe. Having fewer people out on the roads can help snowplow drivers avoid traffic and keep roads clear.

“Just like you, our snowplows can get stuck when traffic snarls like that,” Gleason said. “If we have fewer people out there on the roads, No. 1 – it’s going to keep people safe and No. 2 – it’s going to allow our plows the opportunity to get those roads clear.”

Officials with the Tooele County and Granite school districts said they are monitoring the weather and will announce closures, if any, according to their established procedures.

Additionally: Watch for emergency lights. Slow down and give room for first responders.

If you are involved in a minor fender bender, and your vehicle is drivable – move off the roadway.

Equipment: No bald tires, good wipers, and windshields/windows clear of ice and snow.
