Police: Gunman At Large After Shooting Leaves 1 Dead, 1 Injured

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Two men were gunned down outside a convenience store in Salt Lake City overnight, police said.
One man was shot in the leg, and the other died at the scene.
The shooting happened shortly before midnight outside the Corner Stop in the area of 200 East and Hampton Avenue.
Witnesses said a gray Nissan Altima pulled up to the location, and a person exited the vehicle and began firing shots before getting back inside the car and speeding off.

“Got up this morning, and my husband was like, ‘Someone got shot there,’ and neither one of us are surprised,” said Abbey Ayre, who lives on Hampton Avenue.
She said she didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary overnight.
“There’s always a lot of loud noises coming from over there,” she said. “So it’s kind of like you just shook it off anyways.”
Ayre said the clientele in and around the convenience store is questionable.
“A lot of shady people,” she said. “(It) reeks of weed. There’s always people coming over, playing music all night in their cars, running in and out.”
The shooter is at large, and no suspects have been identified.
“I don’t believe there is a worry,” said Lt. Bill Manzanares with the Salt Lake City Police Department. “But it is still unknown right now whether or not it was specifically targeted at this address or the victim.”
Homicide detectives are now investigating.
Ayer said she hopes some good can come out of the tragic incident.
“It’s a bummer, but hopefully it means something will change,” she said. “It will be a little bit safer.”
“I wish sincerest condolences to the families that lost people,” she added. “… It’s not right. It’s not OK.”
