UPDATE: Police have identified the two people injured by gunfire as an 18-year-old man and 19-year-old man.

According to a press release from the Salt Lake City Police Department Tuesday afternoon, both have been upgraded to serious condition.

“The identity and age of the person killed is not being released pending confirmation and next-of-kin-notification,” stated the release.

Police identified the third injured person as a 21-year-old man. They said he was hit with a gun and has since been released from the hospital, along with the 19-year-old.

We also learned more details about what happened following the altercation and shooting inside a unit at the Seasons At Pebble Creek apartment complex.

“After the shooting, several people left the area, including the three other injured people. Officers located a car at 1150 South Redwood Road. Officers believe the car had two injured people inside. Officers believe someone in the car waved down another driver on Redwood Road and asked for a ride to the hospital.”

The release continued: “Officers located a second car at 60 South Redwood Road. That car had one injured person inside. Police performed life-saving efforts on that person. Paramedics transported that person to the hospital. ”

Police reiterated Tuesday that this incident appears to be an isolated and targeted incident involving people who know each other.

Officers also stated in the release that the motive in this case is being investigated as an attempted robbery.

“Detectives believe before the shooting, several people were inside the apartment unit when a fight broke out. During the fight, at least one firearm was used and fired.”

Police said detectives are still investigating whether more than one gun was used, as well as the relationships to everyone involved and their association to the shooting.

At this time, no arrests have been made.

SALT LAKE CITY — One person is dead and three others are injured following a shooting at an apartment complex in Salt Lake City.

Officials with the Salt Lake City Police Department said the incident occurred around 7 p.m. Monday at the Seasons At Pebble Creek apartment complex, near 1700 South and Prospect Street, and that there were multiple crime scenes.

“Officers arrived on scene; they found a very chaotic scene here at the apartment complex. Multiple witnesses were telling them that a person had been shot inside of an apartment complex,” said Brent Weisberg, spokesperson for the SLCPD.

Officers then entered the unit where the commotion had taken place. Inside, they found one person with multiple gunshot wounds.

Weisberg said officers performed life-saving measures on the victim, but unfortunately, the individual died on scene.

“Based on the witness statements that we’re getting from the people here at the apartment complex is that immediately after the shooting, several people left in a vehicle towards Redwood Road,” Weisberg said in a press conference around 8:20 p.m.

Police later confirmed that two vehicles had been located along Redwood Road — one at 1150 S. Redwood Road and the other at 60 S. Redwood Road.

“We believe that those vehicles left this apartment complex and then ultimately stopped along Redwood Road, and all of those vehicles had at least one person who was injured in it,” the spokesperson said in an update around 10 p.m.

Three other people were injured during the incident Monday night, according to police. Two of them — who were listed as serious and critical — sustained gunshot injuries, while the other had non-life-threatening injuries and was not found with a gunshot wound.

“Detectives believe the person was physically assaulted inside the apartment unit,” stated a press release late Monday night from the SLCPD.

Police said one officer suffered an injury while performing life-saving measures inside the apartment unit. He received medial treatment on scene and at an area hospital, according to the release.

“Based on the preliminary information, detectives believe there were several people, likely known to each other, inside one of the apartment units when a fight broke out, which resulted in the shooting. Initially, there was information suggesting this may have been a home invasion. At this time, that does not appear to be the case. This does not appear to be a random incident,” stated the release.

No arrests have been made at this time.

As of 10 p.m., police were waiting on a search warrant to be cleared so officers could go into the apartment complex and collect additional evidence.

“We still don’t know the motive to this, but we do believe that this was a very isolated incident involving people known at this particular apartment unit, and it does not appear that this was a random incident,” Weisberg said during the press conference at 10 p.m.

Anyone with information about the shooting — which police said is the sixth homicide in Salt Lake City for 2022 — has been asked to call 801-799-3000 and reference case number 22-106677.
