Why the AP hasn’t called the Arizona governor’s race

The Associated Press has not yet called the governor's race in Arizona between Democratic Secretary of State Katie Hobbs and Republican former TV broadcaster Kari Lake. Vote counting in Arizona has been ongoing since Tuesday with officials in the state's 15 counties releasing tallies of votes as they're processed. Much of the focus has been on Maricopa, the state's largest county. Other big releases have been coming from Arizona's next two most populated counties, Pima and Pinal. The margin in the governor's race sat at just over 26,000 votes, with Lake about one percentage point behind.

Police: No powder found in envelopes in candidate’s office

Police say no powder was in two suspicious unopened envelopes found at the Phoenix campaign headquarters of the Republican candidate for Arizona governor. The Kari Lake campaign said Saturday that an additional envelope containing a white powdery substance was earlier tossed into the trash by a staffer who did not notify security before it was emptied. Phoenix emergency officials say they were called to the building last weekend on a report of an envelope containing suspicious powder. The gubernatorial race between Lake and Democrat Katie Hobbs remained too early to call as of Saturday morning.

Democrats keep Senate majority as GOP push falters in Nevada

Democrats will keep control of the Senate, repelling Republican efforts to retake the chamber and making it harder to thwart President Joe Biden's agenda. The fate of the House is still uncertain as the GOP struggles to pull together a slim majority there. Catherine Cortez Masto's victory Saturday in Nevada gives Democrats the 50 seats they need to keep the Senate. Her win reflects the surprising strength of Democrats across the U.S. this year. Democratic Senate leader Chuck Schumer says the American people have rejected "the anti-democratic, authoritarian, nasty and divisive direction" of Republicans who were promoted by Donald Trump. Biden says, "I feel good."

Colorado voters decriminalize psychedelic mushrooms

Colorado voters have passed a ballot initiative to decriminalize psychedelic mushrooms for people 21 and older and to create state-regulated centers where participants can experience the drug. Colorado becomes the second state after Oregon to establish a regulated system for substances like psilocybin and psilocin, the hallucinogens found in some mushrooms. Colorado's initiative eventually will allow an advisory board to add other plant-based psychedelic drugs to the program. Proponents argued that the state's current approach to mental health has failed and that naturally occurring psychedelics can treat depression, PTSD, anxiety and addiction. Critics said decriminalization would jeopardize public safety.

Nevada's ballot count is entering its final act and may determine which party controls the U.S. Senate. Idaho House seat goes to Republican after glitch reported

What initially appeared to be a Democratic win in the Idaho House has turned into a Republican victory after a glitch in reporting early voting was corrected in south-central Idaho. Chief Deputy Secretary of State Chad Houck says the House seat representing Jerome, Blaine and Lincoln counties went to Republican Jack Nelsen, not Democrat Karma Metzler Fitzgerald, after more than 700 votes were added to the count on the state website late Thursday morning.

23-year-old defeats 2-term mayor in small Louisiana city

A 23-year-old has defeated a two-term incumbent to become a small Louisiana city's next mayor. WWL-TV reported Wednesday that Democrat Tyrin Truong bested 47-year-old independent Mayor Wendy O'Quin Perrette in Bogalusa. That's a city of about 11,000 in southeastern Louisiana. Truong says that he is "honestly at a loss for words" and that he wants to build "a better Bogalusa and a better city." Perrette was first elected in 2014 and has conceded this year's election. She says Truong lacks the skills to lead the city but that she prays she is wrong and will help during the transition.
