SALT LAKE CITY — A Utah man who allegedly kidnapped a teenager and drove her to Missouri in July is facing several felony charges.
Douglas Jonathan Logan, 24, was charged on Monday in 3rd District Court on felony charges involving sexual abuse of a minor, according to court documents. He was also charged on Jan. 2 for kidnapping, a second-degree felony.
On July 11, 2024, the victim’s family reported that their 16-year-old daughter had been missing for two days. The family believed that Logan kidnapped her since the two were in a relationship.
According to court documents, the family did not approve of Logan’s relationship with the teen. They reportedly told her not to see him. The family said they did not permit Logan to take the teen out of Utah.
“[The investigation determined] that [the teen] and Logan resigned from their jobs on July 9, 2024, and left their cell phones with Logan’s family,” a police affidavit stated.
Police said they learned Logan rented a 2023 Ford Explorer and planned to run away with the teenager. According to police, the teen told a friend she planned to go to Missouri with Logan, where the three could meet.
On July 12, Utah authorities worked with the Callaway County Sheriff’s Office in Missouri to find Logan and the teen. The Callaway County sheriffs found the two and Logan was taken into custody.
Interview with the suspect
While in police custody, Logan admitted he’d been dating the teen since Jan. 2024 and considered her his girlfriend.
“Logan said they met under ‘morally questionable’ circumstances as he was her ‘youth mentor,'” read another police affidavit. “Logan stated that throughout their relationship, they had arguments that ‘turned physical’ and that (the teen) never ‘hurt him.'”
Logan told police that the two had sex. He reportedly said he would continue to have this relationship with the teen “even if it lands me in jail for the rest of my life.”
Interview with the teen
The teen told police that on the night of the kidnapping, Logan threatened to kill her. “When she told Logan she changed her mind and wanted to go home, he told her, ‘Keep talking like that and I’ll kill you,” the affidavit stated.
The teen said she kept asking Logan to take her back home, but he ignored her. At one point, the two got into a physical argument after she threatened to call the police.
According to the affidavit, Logan threatened to kill her and dragged her into the woods, where he blamed her for ruining his life and said it was “her responsibility” to make up for it.
According to court documents, Logan was referring to an incident on July 5 where the teen’s family found a firearm in her room that Logan gave her. This prompted an investigation by Riverton police which concluded that Logan was giving the teen marijuana.
During that investigation, police found sexually explicit images of the teen that she gave Logan.
According to court documents, the teen said Logan had physically abused her several times during the relationship. Two of the assaults reportedly resulted in the teen being knocked out while in his car.
