SOUTH JORDAN — A home security camera captured an intense shootout Friday night between South Jordan police and a suspected car thief.
“You in the vehicle, show me your hands! Show me your hands! Show me your hands. Quit reaching!” police are heard in the video.
Friday evening shooting began as a response to reports of a car theft near 9400 S. 4600 West.
“He’s running, he’s running! Talk to me … (shot) Oh (expletive) (more shots),” officers said in the video.
The police shootout played out right outside Delaney Bradshaw’s South Jordan home.
“They were in the front yard, then looked at the garage camera and realized out that was in our driveway,” Bradshaw said,
Bradshaw showed the bullet holes likely left by police returning fire. Bullet holes were left in his BBQ smoker and cement brick fence.
“So boom, boom, and one more right here,” Bradshaw said.
South Jordan police said officers responded to a call of a car theft at a house around the corner but arrived to find the suspect hiding in a car at Bradshaw’s home.
“He exited out this way, and the door was open here,” he said.
Bradshaw showed the footprints in the mud from where the suspected thief ran from police and hopped the fence before officers chased the person down and had another shootout.
Eventually, officers captured the suspect, who later died in the hospital, according to police.
Surprisingly, none of it phases Bradshaw at all.
“I know it happened in my yard and 30 feet from the house, but honestly, I still feel safe,” Bradshaw said.
He said it may hit him later, but he’s always been told he’s cool under pressure.
“I’m not shaking; I’ll probably have some coffee and maybe a cocktail later and think about it and just be like that, actually; that was crazy,” he said.
He’s simply glad no police or anyone in his home was hurt.
As of Saturday, police aren’t releasing the name of the suspected thief who died but confirmed that the officers involved are now on administrative leave, pending an investigation with an Officer Involved Critical Incident Team.
This latest incident marks the fourth fatal police shooting in Utah in the last four days.
