SALT LAKE CITY — Police were seeking suspects Thursday in at least six recent acts of vandalism and burglary involving cars in an eastside neighborhood.
According to Brent Weisberg with the Salt Lake City Police Department, the crimes took place near roughly 800 East Belmont Avenue.
A homeowner shared the video with KSL TV showing one of the suspects, believed to be a teen, stomping down and kicking at the windshield of an SUV outside her garage on Dec. 28.
“It appears that there are at least three teenagers who have been going around the area of 800 East Belmont Avenue and trying to break into cars by smashing out the windows and stealing things,” Weisberg said.
Weisberg said detectives did not yet know who the teens were, but officers were working with their counterparts at local schools in hopes of identifying them.
“This is certainly something that’s caught our radar,” Weisberg said. “We’re very fortunate in this case that there are cameras that captured some of these individuals.”
Weisberg said anybody in the neighborhood who had experienced damage to their cars and had not reported the matter to police should do so.
He also urged people in general to make their cars “showroom clean,” essentially keeping them empty of valuables and other possessions as a deterrent to burglars.
