Police arrest man connected to ‘Sneaker Con’ fatal shooting, more suspects outstanding

SALT LAKE CITY — One person is dead after a shooting outside the Salt Palace Convention Center Saturday afternoon.

Salt Lake City police spokesman Brent Weisberg said one person was shot by a gun on 150 S., West Temple at approximately 3:15 p.m. as “Sneaker Con” was taking place inside.

Police arrived to find the victim with critical injuries on the ground and began first aid. The victim was transported to the hospital by ambulance and did not survive and has not been identified.

“We believe there was some sort of fight involving multiple people who just left the convention center where there was a convention happening,” Weisberg said.

Police said they believe the shooter and at least one other person associated with him ran into a nearby parking garage and left in a car.

The shooting outside while an event focused on buying, selling, and trading high-end shoes that can be worth thousands of dollars was happening.

Jazmin Taula of Salt Lake City walked out of the Salt Palace to find the chaotic crime scene.

“I had looked across the street,” Taula said, “and he actually had his brother there. His brother was crying, trying to explain to the police what happened.”

She added that she saw shoes in the middle of the street, near the victim.

“The shoes are $600, $700, $800 shoes sometimes,” Taula said, “so to have that kind of value just walking around, it can be unsafe.”

Weisberg said police are reviewing security footage from businesses nearby the shooting. Police are not releasing the identity or any details of the victim until the next of kin is notified, and as of Saturday evening, no arrests had been made.

Weisberg is asked for any witnesses with video or information of this shooting to call 801-799-3000.
