WEST POINT, Davis County — What began as a “domestic issue” in West Point on Monday ended in officer gunfire that resulted in the death of a man, according to the Davis County Sheriff’s Office.
The sheriff’s office said someone reported the domestic incident at a home near 670 N. 2300 West.
Upon arrival, the Davis County Sheriff’s Office said a deputy spoke to family members and found 43-year-old Nathan Paul was possibly having a mental health episode.
Deputies said they responded to the house the night before for a similar situation. Paul was sent to the hospital that Sunday night but was released Monday morning, the sheriff’s office said.
The Clinton City Police Department assisted in attempts to de-escalate the situation when officers found Paul was armed. As the situation continued, police said two Clinton officers discharged their weapons, striking Paul.
According to a statement from CCPD, Paul was pronounced deceased on the scene.
CCPD said the two Clinton officers have been placed on administrative leave, while the sheriff’s office handles a critical incident investigation.
“The Clinton City Police Department extends our sincere condolences to all affected by this incident, and we support the Davis County Officer-Involved Critical Incident Protocol Team in their investigation,” Clinton Police Chief Shawn Stoker said.
