Back-To-School Plan Stretching Classroom Supply Resources Thin

OGDEN, Utah – With the first day of school approaching, districts have their plans in place for teaching during the coronavirus pandemic.

However, one of the strategies to slow the spread of germs is stretching classroom supply resources thin.

“Under the current conditions, a lot of the resources – classroom supplies – that could or normally would be shared among students isn’t a possibility at the moment,” said Rich Nye, Ogden School District superintendent.

Nye said instead of sharing a box of crayons or a pair of scissors around the classroom, this year each student needs to have his or her own.

For many students, it will be another item on their parent’s back to school shopping list. But for those in need, districts are trying to fill in, and that means more demand for donations.

“We need extra supplies, so each child can have their own,” Nye said. “Think box of crayons, think rulers, think classroom scissors, things like that.”

He said on top of needing more supplies, the high unemployment rate means more students need help. While the district is able to provide each student with two masks, more donations would be welcome so they can have replacements ready when students inevitably lose or ruin them.
