Sidney Crosby Stuns The Utah Hockey Club With Overtime Winner
Jan 30, 2025, 9:35 AM

SALT LAKE CITY- The Utah Hockey Club hosted Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins at Delta Center for the first time ever tonight in a nationally televised affair on TNT.
The energy in the building was palpable as Sidney Crosby warmed up on the ice pregame as Penguins and Hockey Club fans alike watched attentively. But after the puck dropped, besides a tussle between Liam O’Brien and Bokondji Imama, Utah and Pittsburgh got off to a bit of a sluggish start.
Neither team saw any real scoring chance, that was until a holding penalty on Blake Lizotte put Utah on the power play where Mikhail Sergachev scored on a beautiful wrist shot top shelf in his first game back after missing five matchups due to injury.
The Utah Hockey Club took the 1-0 lead into the first intermission, but the Penguins seemed determined coming out of the locker room to tie the game. Pittsburgh finally got past Connor Ingram just before the halfway point of the period on a long-range shot from Marcus Pettersson that deflected off of Alexander Kerfoot and into the back of the net.
The tie didn’t last long, however. A loose puck in the Penguins’ offensive zone found its way to the stick of John Marino who flung a perfectly placed pass up the ice to Michael Carcone who didn’t give up on the breakaway opportunity, chipping the rebound into the back of the net to give the Hockey Club the 2-1 lead.
Utah once again entered the break with a one-goal lead and was only from breaking their losing streak, but Pittsburgh had other ideas. Erik Karlsson was streaking up the right side of the ice when he put the puck on net, beating Connor Ingram on the near post and tying the game at two.
The last ten minutes of regulation were tense as both teams were searching for the game-winning goal, but neither wanted to commit a mistake that would cost them the game, and ultimately the clock hit zeros, and Utah and Pittsburgh were still tied at two goals a piece.
In overtime, both teams had possessions and scoring chances, but the game was ultimately won by Sidney Crosby himself on a backhand shot with only a minute left in the game.

First Period
O’Brien has dropped the gloves with Imama.
It was over quickly but Spicy Tuna hyped the crowd on his way to the box.
Thats what he does.

Decent scrap.
O’Brien always brings the juice. https://t.co/AD79xyjn6t

Pretty slow start to this game.
Utah looks like they’re adjusting to the new lines which is understandable. Lots of new combinations out there between the forwards and defensemen.

Sergachev let the crowd know he’s definitely back.
So much emotion on that Celly.

Elite puck movement from Utah here.
Patience from Cooley in the corner, dirty drop pass from Schmaltz, and Sergachev goes top shelf.
What a play. https://t.co/OVU9C6eeoZ

Utah is buzzing after that Sergachev goal, especially on the 2nd line.
Several opportunities in close that nearly ended up in the back of the net.
Nedeljkovic was really stretched on the last sequence. Energy is noticeably higher.

Josh Doan’s presence in the offensive zone is absolutely suffocating. He uses his stick and body so well to free up pucks and win battles.
You want that guy on your team.
— Cole Bagley (@BagleyKSLsports) January 30, 2025
It took a minute to get comfortable, but once Sergachev scored Utah absolutely erupted.
Tons of shots on net, suffocating pressure, and sustained O-zone possession. Great first period. https://t.co/HmYU1mu4yK

Second Period
O’Brien took a slap shot to what appeared to be his right leg.
Instantly in some pain and then hobbled to the bench without putting much weight on it.
Something to keep an eye on.

Barrett Hayton to the box for high sticking.

3 on 1 for the Penguins but Ingram makes the save.
He was stellar on the Penguins power play. Saved a one-timer in close too. Anticipated the shot and easily kept it out.
Utah back to full strength.

Brutal deflection off Kerfoot’s skate.
Ingram was prepared to make the save, but it quickly changed directions and beat him. https://t.co/NeqRC1e6tA

CARCONE SCORES ON THE BREAKAWAY!!!!

Perfect example of always following your shot and crashing the net.
Great second effort from Carcone to retake the lead. https://t.co/rgfWnpavwC

Logan Cooley just smacked the puck out the air to put a shot on goal in close.
If that went in, goal of the year thus far.
Kid is just unbelievably talented.

Third Period
Critical poke check from Marino on that last sequence.
Shooter had a wide-open look at the net but Marino disrupted it at the last second to deflect it high.
Little things like that make a huge difference.
