SALT LAKE CITY — Many Utah elected officials are urging Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis to consider running for President of the United States in 2024.

DeSantis, a Republican who has been serving as Florida Governor since January 2019, was encouraged to run by 86 Utah officials Monday.

Sen. Dan McCay, Sen. Todd Weiler and Sen. Mike McKell issued the following statement:

“Our nation stands at a crossroads. We recognize the need for a strong leader to guide and direct our nation, someone with a proven track record, strong conservative foundation, and who understands the operations of state government. We need a leader who will strengthen and unify the nation. Gov. Ron DeSantis serves his country and state well and skillfully navigated the many challenges Florida faced during his first term.

“As elected officials in Utah, we call upon Gov. DeSantis to form an exploratory committee for President of the United States in 2024.”

Just days earlier, former U.S. President Donald Trump called DeSantis an “average” governor who would have never won in 2018 without Trump’s help also calling him, “Ron DeSanctimonious.”

The support for DeSantis from Utah leaders was announced Monday, while multiple sources expect Trump to make a formal speech Tuesday, possibly announcing his candidacy for President of the United States.
