TOQUERVILLE, Utah — A couple is grateful they took the long way home after they were able to save a woman from a burning car.
Deanna McNary said she and her husband live in Toquerville and decided to take the slightly longer and more scenic route home through Quail Creek to look at the leaves when they saw the car in front of them in flames.
The car continued to drive, but there were flames coming out of the bottom of the vehicle.
“The poor lady had no idea,” McNary said. “We were flashing her, honking and drove along side to get her to pull over. We think she probably thought we were crazy.”
Finally, they pulled in front of the woman to get her to pull over, which she finally did.
“We pulled her from her car and flames were now in [the] engine and side of car. She is fine, but pretty shook up,” McNary said.
Sgt. Cameron Roden with Utah Highway Patrol said the fire happened on State Route 17 near milemarker 4 around 7:51 p.m.
“They closed southbound lanes and ended up closing northbound lanes a few moments later. The car was fully engulfed, nobody in it though, the driver got out.”
Roden said the cause of the fire seems to be mechanical at this point.
McNary and her husband are just grateful they were there at the right time.
“I guess we were meant to be there,” she said.
