Bodies of Two Missing Campers Found in Strawberry Reservoir

WASATCH COUNTY, Utah – After three days of searching, crews have recovered the bodies of two missing campers in Strawberry Reservoir.
The body of Benjamin Magalis, 24, of Minnesota, was recovered on Saturday night, and the body of Chenoa L. Plank, 26, of Sugar House, was found Sunday evening, Wasatch County Sheriff’s Office said.
Plank and Magalis were fishing near Chicken Creek West at the reservoir on Monday when their canoe capsized and the two drowned, officials said. The water temperature was around 38 degrees at that time.
“Sadly, Chenoa and Benjamin perished in the water. The State Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the official cause of death, although it appears they may have drowned,” authorities said.
Plank’s dog, Hazel, was wearing a life jacket and was rescued by Wasatch County Search and Rescue and Plank’s family.
Plank and Magalis told family members they were going camping in the Strawberry Reservoir area from Sunday to Tuesday, but had not been seen or heard from since, according to Wasatch County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Jared Rigby.
Rigby said the woman’s father called to report his daughter missing Thursday night, launching the search.
“We spent several days with the Plank and Magalis families and have greatly appreciated their strength and kindness. We mourn with them at this difficult time and are grateful for all those that have volunteered and helped so generously.”
