SALT LAKE CITY — One person was critically injured while three others were hurt in a crash early Friday morning.
Officials with the Salt Lake City Police Department said they received multiple calls regarding the crash, which happened at the intersection of 700 East and 600 South around 1 a.m.
Officers arrived and found two cars, a Kia and a Mini Cooper, with heavy damage. Police said their preliminary investigation shows the driver of the Mini Cooper was speeding on 600 South when it crashed into the Kia.
Three people were inside the Kia at the time of the crash. The woman driving the Kia suffered minor injuries while one backseat passenger suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Another backseat passenger was critically injured.
Police said the driver of the Mini Cooper, 19-year-old driver, Liam Kavanagh, suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
According to police, Kavanagh showed signs of impairment and admitted to police he was drinking and ran a red light, causing the collision. He also hinted that he might have caused another traffic accident before this one.
Kavanagh was booked into the Salt Lake County jail on one felony count of driving under the influence, one misdemeanor count of unlawful consumption of alcohol by a minor, and a traffic infraction, according to police.
A passenger of the Mini Cooper, 19-year-old, Nicholas Kalberer, was booked on one misdemeanor count of failure to disclose identity, one misdemeanor count of obstructing justice, and one misdemeanor count of unlawful consumption of alcohol by a minor.
According to police, Kalberer attempted to present himself as a witness and not a passenger of the car, along with refusing to identify himself to police.
