SALT LAKE CITY — It’s the last week of January and studies show 43% of people have given up on their resolutions. Sports mental performance coach Justin Su’a shares some winning strategies to get us back on track.
The former BYU baseball player is now a sports mental performance coach for some of the world’s top athletes like Tony Finau and Francis Tiafoe.
He said if we want to refocus our goals, start with a growth mindset, something Finau, the Utah pro-golfer, has mastered.
“I’m inspired by his veracious learning. He just wants to continue to improve,” Su’a said.
Su’a has developed the GWOP framework. G is for goals, what are you going after?
“It’s like driving a car. Imagine getting in a car and driving, not knowing where you’re going to go,” Su’a said.
“W” is your why. Why do you want to achieve these goals?
“O” stands for obstacles you’ll face and “P” is plan. What’s your plan when things get too tough?
“Mike Tyson, the great philosopher, he has said one of my favorite quotes: ‘Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face. So, you wanna plan for getting punched in the face,’” Su’a said.
If you give yourself some grace knowing there will be some setbacks, Su’a said you’ll be more motivated to keep moving toward your goals.
