SALT LAKE CITY — The Wasatch County Sheriff’s Office released an update on the shooting death of Patrick L. Hayes on Tuesday.

In the press release, sheriff’s office officials said that a firearm was recovered, claiming that it may have been the one used to shoot and kill Hayes in September.

Police later confirmed they had identified and made contact with the other driver in the road rage incident.

According to the release, Hayes is believed to have been involved in a road rage incident, and officials say that he approached another vehicle with a baton and knife, attempting to get the other driver to step out of their vehicle.

The office states in its release that the second vehicle’s driver appears to then shoot and kill Hayes and that the office is analyzing evidence to determine whether he attempted to enter the second vehicle.

“We are fully investigating this matter for all possible crimes, including homicide, and considering all defenses, including self-defense,” the release states.

Josh Probst with the Wasatch County Sheriff’s Office said investigators have identified and made contact with the other driver. However, police have not announced whether arrests have been made, nor given the identity of any other involved persons.

“As soon as the results of the evidence analysis are available, we plan to provide further information. Until that time, we do not anticipate answering additional questions,” the release states.

Hayes’ family issued a statement Wednesday afternoon reiterating their hope for finding out who killed him.

“Patrick Hayes will be remembered as a kind, loving, and caring person. We are aware of the statement made by the investigating agency in charge of finding out what truly happened to Patrick. We do not believe that this was self-defense from the man who killed Patrick as it has been alluded to by the perpetrator in his statements to police. There are many questions that we have but we will choose to wait until the County Attorney chooses the charges that will be sought to ask those. We believe in our hearts that this was an unjustified homicide, and we hope that the evidence and investigation proves that. We hope that the detectives will wrap up their investigation soon so that we may receive and pursue justice for Patrick. We want to thank the detectives for their diligent work in seeking out the truth,” the statement said.
