‘Hazmat incident’ in Millcreek causes road closures and business evacuations

Jun 18, 2024, 1:20 PM | Updated: 5:49 pm

MILLCREEK — A hazmat spill at a building caused roads to be shut down and people to be evacuated Tuesday.

Benjamin Porter with Unified Fire said the spill of the unknown chemical happened near 3900 South and 250 West at approximately 12 p.m.

Porter said the 55-gallon barrel behind the building started to off-gas, producing a white smoke. Because of the unknown nature of the chemical, he said crews evacuated the building and the neighboring businesses.

First responders also closed off the roads and shut down the nearby TRAX lines that ran behind the building.

“One of the biggest dangers for us is not knowing what is being released out there. So, we’re initially going to set up an isolation zone where we can figure out where the wind is coming from, and we can figure out where we need to evacuate and how far out we need to evacuate just to be safe,” Porter said.

A few hours later, crews cleared the area and lifted evacuation orders after determining the chemical was no longer a threat after it was stabilized and cooled, according to Unified Fire.

Unified Fire did not say what the chemical was, but it will be disposed of at a dump after it solidifies.
