80-year-old hiker found dead on Mount Olympus trail by search and rescue crews

COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS — A man was found dead on the Mount Olympus Trailhead by search and rescue crews on Christmas.

Det. Arlan Bennett with the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office said the man was identified later as William Thomas, 80.

Bennett said the sheriff’s office received a call from hikers reporting a body found approximately a mile up the Mount Olympus Trailhead. When first responders arrived, they located Thomas and pronounced him dead at the scene.

Bennett said it appeared Thomas died as a result of a fall he sustained while hiking.
