HURRICANE, Washington County — A man was badly injured on a horse racetrack in Washington County Thursday morning, which ultimately led to the man’s death, according to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputy Joel Hafoka with the sheriff’s office said it received a call about a traumatic injury at the Washington County Legacy Park’s Racetrack at 8:05 a.m.
The 48-year-old man was practicing riding on the racetrack when something spooked the horse, causing it to go through the PVC pipe guardrail, according to Hafoka. At that point, the man fell off the horse and it was unclear if the horse landed on him, trampled him or injured him some other way.
There were no other horses on the track.
When medical assistance arrived, Hafoka said they attempted life-saving measures on the man, but he was pronounced deceased at the scene.
An investigation began and the medical examiner is working to determine how the horse injured him.
