Keeping Your Home Safe From Water Damage

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – March, April and May are the wettest months in Utah, and you know a summer thunderstorm isn’t out of the question soon.

So it’s a great reminder that the one thing we so desperately need in this desert state is also something you have to keep away from your home – water.

“Water is the great enemy to homeownership,” said Blake Taylor with Handyman Pro.

When it comes to your home, water is not your friend. And we can’t avoid it — storms will bring heavy rain time and time again.

The preparation you do now can prevent the next downpour from being a disaster.

“Making sure that the downspouts and the gutters aren’t clogged helps keep water out of the roof and keeps damage from happening,” Taylor said.

The gutters aren’t the only thing you can check right now.

Check your window’s seal and caulking and fill the gaps and check the weep holes in the windowsill to make sure they’re clear for draining.

If you’ve got wooden windows and trim, make sure they’re freshly painted — that’ll keep them from rotting.

For those who have central air, make sure you flush that drain in the basement by pouring water down once a year.

And outside, check the curbing and concrete to make sure your driveway channels water away from your house.

The small fixes don’t cost all that much, but you’ll have major repairs that cost a lot more if water pools at the foundation or seeps inside of your home.
