OGDEN — Flames engulfed a building in Ogden Saturday evening in the area of 22nd and Lincoln Street.
Deputy Fire Chief Mike Slater said crews were dispatched to a fire at 4:39 p.m. at a five-story under-construction apartment building. The chief said crews were still battling the blaze after 7:00 p.m.
Another official with the Ogden Fire Department said the fire had been contained to the block across the street from the public safety building.
“Due to the high winds coming from the east to the west, and the cold weather, we’ve had some difficulty fighting the fire,” Slater said.
Despite initially being contained to the apartment building, Slater said the fire ended up spreading to a vacant building to the west.
Slater confirmed that there were no injuries associated with the fire. He asked members of the community to avoid the scene of the fire while crews continued to work. Power was shut down in the area after a high-tension power line posed a threat to firefighters in the area.
Slater said there are several road closures associated with the fire scene: 22nd Street between Grant Street and Lincoln Street were closed. Lincoln and Grant between 21st Street and 23rd Street were closed. He was not sure how long it would take before the scene was clear.
“We are incredibly proud of the rapid response and teamwork demonstrated by our firefighters, ensuring the safety of our community. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. We will provide updates as more information becomes available,” the city of Ogden said.
The Davinci Acadamy, which sits adjacent to the fire, announced that classes and tutoring would be canceled on Monday while they assess damages. Slater said the extreme heat from the fire shattered some of the school’s windows.
The cause of the fire was still under investigation.
