LAYTON, Utah — More details are after an elementary school crossing guard was hit and killed by a car Tuesday morning. We’re hearing from parents whose children use that crosswalk and knew the crossing guard.
The Layton City Police Department said that Steven Winn, 67, was killed while performing his duties at the crosswalk at Main St. and 1600 N. near Vae View Elementary.
According to police, a semi-truck driver had stopped for Winn, but a woman driving a car didn’t see him, and hit him. Winn was wearing his reflective vest and holding a stop sign.
A Layton PD officer who was stopped at the intersection witnessed the accident and began first aid on Winn until medical crews could arrive.
Police said a traffic light was installed at the intersection to help with pedestrian crossing throughout the day.
The crossing guard was employed as a crossing guard by Layton City.
Police said children saw the Layton crossing guard hit
Police said there were children who saw what happened. But it’s unclear how many children saw the accident or how they’re handling it.
Parents who spoke with KSL TV said they were shocked and sad to learn of Winn’s death. They said he was always friendly with their children, and he’ll be missed.
One of the parents of children who use the crosswalk said Winn was the kind of person who tried to show the students how much he cared.
“Around Christmas time, he’d wear his Santa hat, and his wife would join him. He’d hand out candy canes and make it a special time of year,” said Michael Jenson, parent of a Vae View student.
The Davis School District said they’re sending grief counselors to help any children who may be struggling with the accident.
