Little Cottonwood Canyon will close early Sunday morning for avalanche mitigation

SALT LAKE CITY — Avalanche conditions in Little Cottonwood Canyon are forcing crews to close down traffic Sunday morning.
According to the Utah Department of Transportation, State Route 210 in the canyon will close down just after midnight. Uphill traffic will close at 12:30 a.m. at the mouth of the canyon, while downhill traffic will close at 1 a.m. at Snowbirds Entry 1.

UDOT plans to reopen the canyon at approximately 8:30 a.m. and will update on social media if that time changes.
Weather forecasters expect snowfall from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday in the upper areas of Little and Big Cottonwood Canyon. About a foot of snow will cover the roads near resorts. Snow flurries are expected to be near resorts after 4 p.m.

“It could be busy the day after a big snowstorm, plan your travels wisely,” UDOT said. “Be prepared for ALL road conditions & weather-related travel delays in AM.”
UDOT also warns drivers not to park illegally in the canyons or block neighborhood access while waiting to access the canyons. Drivers will be fined $75-$150 for illegal roadside parking.
